Thurgood Marshall

Thurgood Marshall, 1908-1993.  Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States, 1967-1991.  Mint condition black ink signature, Thurgood Marshall.

While counsel for the NAACP, Marshall represented civil rights claimants all over the United States and won 32 of 35 cases before the United States Supreme Court.  Among them was Brown v. Board of Education (1954), in which the Court declared racial segregation of public schools unconstitutional.

President John F. Kennedy appointed Marshall to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1961.  In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed him Solicitor General of the United States, a role in which he won 14 of the 19 cases that he argued before the Supreme Court on behalf of the government.  In 1967, Johnson appointed Marshall to the Supreme Court.  Marshall served until his health forced him to retire in 1991.

During his years on the Supreme Court, Marshall was a staunch liberal committed to the values of freedom and equality.

The signature of Marshall, the first African-American to sit on the Supreme Court, has been richly double matted in black suede with an inlaid silver fillet, an engraved identification plate, and a formal portrait of Marshall as an Associate Justice.  It is framed in a simple black frame.
